Traditionally, Chinese cash coins were cast in copper, brass or iron. In mid 1800 the documents were made of three parts copper and two parts of lead. Cast silver coins were regularly produced, but are much rarer. Cast gold are also known to exist but are extremely rare.

Chinese cash coins originated from the barter of farm and rural surplus. These chips came to be used as a medium of exchange themselves and were known as money spade and knife money.
