The spathe is a type of straight sword with a long point, measuring between 0.75 and 1 m in use throughout 1st millennium before Europe and the territory of the Roman Empire until about 600. Later sword through the year 1000 are derived recognizable, but not spathae.
The predecessor of the spathe is the 3rd century BC (La Tene) Celtic sword. The spathe of literature appears in the Roman Empire in the 1st century as an auxiliary weapon alleged Germanic [dubious - discuss] and went from there to become a standard weapon of the heavy infantry, relegating the Gladius to use as a weapon of light infantry. The spathe apparently simply replaced the gladius in the front rows, giving the infantry more to send stuff.
Archaeological many examples of the spathe were found in Britain and Germany. It was used by Germanic warriors, but if it came from Pompeii Gladius swords or Celtic, or longer served as a model for various swords and Viking swords of Europe is a highly speculative topic. The spathe remained popular throughout Migration period. It could have evolved in the knightly sword of the High Middle Ages, from about 1100, but many types of swords which appeared during the period are hard to relate with certainty. The specific details of their manufacture and models used by their manufacturers remain largely unknown.
