FORMER ADAMS, Mycenaean CAPITAL
The site of the former Pellans is located on the slopes of the mountains tumbling Taygetos, halfway between Sparta and Megalopolis. The rugged terrain, hilly and difficult, which surrounds the fertile valley Eurotas Pellans has a unique strategic position. The Spartans acknowledged its strong stance, defending one of the few passages, and built a defensive tower called Charakoma. The remains of this citadel are still visible south village.
Professor Th. Spiropoulos, the last person to undertake major excavation on the site in 1980, was convinced that the site is of considerable historical importance. He postulated the hypothesis that Pellans is the ancient capital of Lakedamonia, and possibly the entire Peloponnese. The main evidence to support his theory was the excavation of ancient tombs tholos outside the village.
THE TOMBS OF ANCIENT THOLOS ADAMS
The tombs of the ancient Tholos ADAMS, are the biggest clue to the nature and importance of the old site whole, because of their extremely unusual construction and size. To understand this uniqueness, it is necessary to study the style of construction Tombs type Tholos in Greece, especially during the Mycenaean period (1580 – 1100 BC).
Tholos tombs (plural tholoi) were used, at the end of the Bronze Age in Greece, as places of burial for royalty and important dignitaries. The size and complexity of these tholoi said they were prepared for the richest classes of society. Lesser people have been buried in one of the simplest "chamber tombs, roughly hacked from the bedrock. This structure base is in large numbers over the whole Eastern Mediterranean.
Tholoi before and during the Mycenaean period, are always built with a tripartite structure. An increase in complexity and refinement continued throughout the period, because the techniques have been refined and refined. The typical plan design consisted of a chamber of hive (Tholos), almost always cantilevered slabs, stone corridor (dromos) and entry (stomion).

These landfills are tombs carved as chamber but from the shape and complexity of Tholos. It is obvious that manufacturers of these tombs such tholos heard, but chose to sculpt rooms. One possibility is simplicity, even if it is easier to carve the stone building masonry. In addition, this type is more common if it was just a "cheaper" option.
Similar tombs are very rare and have been discovered at Thebes, Messinia and Arkadia. The Tholos tombs of Thebes and those around the Palace of Nestor in Messenia are certainly royal tombs. This is the first evidence in the process of proposing Ancient Pellans as a former major site. It is reasonable to suggest that the tombs of this age and type, were reserved exclusively for royalty.
THE Palaiokastro
The ancient acropolis Pellan was probably located on the Palaiokastro hill, east of the city. Excavations by Professor Spiropoulos discovered early and extensive ruins of the Middle Bronze Age, and a large building on the top of the hill. There is no evidence that it was a royal residence, but the size indicates that it was a building important. It is also probable that there was a cemetery full of mounds, which occupies a prime location on the hill. A road leads up to monumental Acropolis, which is very well built and is unique for the region, which also indicates the importance.
ADAMS – PALACE OF Menelaus?
The evidence, while rare, points to ancient Pellans as a major historical site during the Mycenaean period. Anecdotes Historical further strengthen the case Pellan as the site of the former Lakedaimon seat of Menelaus. The Homeric tradition never alludes to Sparta as the seat of Menelaus, the Odyssey merely states that the king's palace was Lakedaimon.
